Water Jet Cutting

Composite Materials

A wide variety of composites and laminates can be cut using abrasive water jet machining.

One of the most common problems associated with cutting composites or laminates with an abrasive water jet machine is the tendency of the material to delaminate or fragment during the piercing process. Low pressure piercing can eliminate the problem on occasion but not in all situations. To ensure success it is necessary to pre-drill a pilot hole in the composite before cutting begins. This secondary and time consuming operation is a major drawback when cutting composites and can add many minutes and sometimes hours to the work.

At Virtucom we do not have this problem. Our built in drilling head allows us to pre-drill composites right before the abrasive jet cuts the composite. This eliminates the need for costly secondary processing and provides a quick right first time solution to cutting composite material.
