How it Works

Since the 1970’s water has a cutting technology. Back then it was only high pressure water that was used to perform the cut. Consequently cutting was relatively slow, often poor quality, not very accurate and limited to relatively soft materials.

In 1982 Abrasive machining systems were introduced. The introduction of an abrasive in to the water jet flow permitted much quicker cutting and many harder materials to be cut.

Our OMAX® machines pressurize water up to 55000 pounds per square inch using a direct drive pump. The water is forced through a diamond jewel with an orifice of about 0.014” at two and a half times the speed of sound (2500 feet per second). The high pressure, fast travelling stream of water then enters what is known as the mixing tube. Here the abrasive medium (Garnet) is introduced and mixed with the water. The abrasive jet leaves the mixing tube through the 0.030” cutting nozzle orifice at about 1000 feet per second. The Garnet wears or grinds the material away as it is passed over it in the water stream. By controlling the directional path and speed at which the cutting nozzle passes over the material the abrasive water jet can cut many different types of material to any shape desired.
